OK, I can’t resist. Is there a name for the intersectiopn of these four? Gno-theisticly Agn-atheist? Just kidding, people. It’s the librarian in me- I like labels. :)
Every self-proclaimed agnostic who rejects atheism because they think it mirrors absolute belief in God with absolute disbelief should see this. If I get into a religious conversation with someone and they say “I’m agnostic,” I say “Great, me too! Now what’s your stance on theism?”
I do agree with atheism not being a “belief.” However, atheism hasn’t really fully proven that there isn’t *something* out there. What I’m trying to say, is, that neither atheists nor theists hold the “ultimate truth,” because neither one has physically proven to there be a God, nor proven to there be NOT a God.
See what I mean? I’m not trying to say that your comment sucked or anything, but that’s my take on it. I think it’s arrogant to say something exists and/or something else doesn’t, especially when we, humans, cannot ever know this while we are alive.
I am somewhat of an atheist, because I simply do not believe in god(s). But does that mean I *know* there isn’t one? No, not at all. There *could* be *something* out there, but no one can know. Agnosticism is not defined as someone who “isn’t sure about God existing,” rather, it’s about NOT KNOWING whether or not God exists. It is possible to not know, while still a believer, and it is possible to know, yet still continue to be an atheist. I once knew a friend in my Algebra class who specifically told me this:
“I KNOW God is there, but I choose not to follow him.”
This is still a valid credential for calling yourself atheist, as atheism is a lack of faith in god(s), not necessarily about proof of this *this* and *that*.
hey! just a thought. Saying that “I KNOW God is there, but I choose not to follow him”, isn’t really atheism, but rebellion. When you choose not to follow something or someone that you believe exists, you are out to prove something or change the course.
just putting my point across…No offence to you or your friend. :)
and i wish it was that simple you know, either believe or not. I somewhere WANT to believe in Him but the logical ‘me’ always intervenes! :\

I’m not actually sure.. I suspect it doesn’t necessarily work since I’m not sure you can be half theist and half atheist…

Some people say that deism is the middle child between theism and atheism. I disagree with this view.

Oops, on the
“isn’t sure about God existing,”
part, I meant to say, “isn’t sure about believing in God.”
